Other topics addressed included the importance of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the Single Market Act, and how these initiatives will revitalise and have positive effects on the EEA. Furthermore, ministers welcomed the formal signing of the Financial Mechanism 2009-2014 and the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty. Ministers also held a special debate on the European Energy Market. Prior to the meeting of the EEA Council, ministers met within the framework of the political dialogue where they discussed Russia, China and the Middle East.
The EEA Council meeting was chaired by Mr Össur Skarphéðinsson, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, and attended by Mr Jonas Gahr Støre, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway and Mr Kurt Jäger, Ambassador, Mission of Liechtenstein to the EU representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liechtenstein, Dr Aurelia Frick. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Olivier Chastel, State Secretary for European Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium, representing the Belgian Presidency of the European Union. Also attending the meeting were members of the Council of the European Union, a representative of the European Commission and the Secretary-General of EFTA.
