July 1st Norway assumed the Chairmanship for the Standing Committee of the EFTA States for the second half of 2009. At today’s Standing Committee meeting the Chair’s Work Programme was taken note of.
The main issues Norway intends to emphasise during its Chairmanship are the following:

Ensure an efficient incorporation of new legislative acts in order to safeguard the good functioning and homogeneity of the EEA Agreement.

Promote EEA EFTA participation in EEA relevant EU bodies and fora.

Monitor implications of the financial crisis on the internal market and safeguard the interest of the EEA EFTA states within this field.

If Iceland applies for membership in the EU, initiate an assessment of any necessary adjustments to the EEA cooperation and establish an appropriate dialogue with the EU on the matter.

Be actively involved in all stages of EU decision making of EEA relevant legislation and actions, including making a priority list for possible EEA EFTA comments.
